Green park plan gets steam boost

The Great Central Railway wants to store engines away from houses
A multi-million pound plan to transform part of Loughborough has taken a step forward with interest from one of the area's leading heritage groups.

An old dump off Nottingham Road in Loughborough has been unused since the 1980s but plans have been put forward to turn it into an ecology park.

Tests on the area have determined the site is safe to build on.

Officials at the Great Central Railway have also said they are hoping to build a steam shed on the park.

The Ecology park is expected to be an area of green spaces with information centres and pathways.

Dave Noble from Charnwood Borough Council said it was a major project: "I'm sure we are talking about millions of pounds, rather than thousands.

"That is if the park goes ahead in it's most visionary state."

The Great Central Railway's chief executive, Graham Oliver, said unlike their current engine shed, a new development at the park would not be near residential areas.

"People don't like black smoke and at our present site there are houses all around which weren't there in 1973 when we built this engine shed.

"We need to look for a new engine shed on a green field or brown field site that isn't going to have development all around it."

The ecology park is still some way from becoming reality - officials say it will be years before anything is built.
