College 'will allow Muslim dress'
Burleigh students

A Leicestershire college is making special provision for Muslim students when its new school uniform is launched later this year.

The uniform is being introduced in September at Burleigh Community College, in Loughborough.

Pupils will be able to wear traditional dress, providing it is in the school colours - black, white and burgundy.

Last week a 15-year-old girl lost a court battle to wear Muslim dress at a school in Luton.

Shabina Begum had been out of her school since September 2002 in a row over her wish to wear an ankle-length jilbab gown.

She said her religious rights and education were being denied, but a High Court judge said the school's uniform policy was aimed at the proper running of a multi-cultural, multi-faith school.
