Shires plans approved by council
Shire shopping centre
The Shires project will be finished in 2007
Plans to double the size of the Shires shopping centre in Leicester have been approved.

The city council voted in favour of the development's initial stages at a meeting on Tuesday night.

It will include a network of indoor shops, outdoor plazas, cafes, a leisure centre and 180 flats on land between High Street and Vaughan Way.

Councillor Joan Garrity said: "For Leicester I think it's enormous."

Developers Hammerson plc hope the project will be finished by Christmas 2007.
