Shopping centre extension unveiled
Shire shopping centre
The Shires is a popular stop off for shoppers in Leicester
The Shires shopping centre in Leicester is to get a 200m extension, new plans have revealed.

The major development, which is to be known as Shires West, will create thousands of new jobs in the city.

It will be built on land which is currently run down and closed off to the public

It includes a "landmark" building which will front Vaughan Way.

The split-level centre will contain not just shops, but leisure facilities, a public square, apartments and possibly a cinema arranged along a network of streets and lanes.

Parking will be provided on the opposite side of Vaughan Way and will be linked to the new development by bridge.

The city council has already given its backing in principle to the ambitious development, by joint owners Hammerson and Hermes.

Now the public will have their chance to give their views when drawings and models go on show for the first time in the Shires on Wednesday.
