Hospitals to charge for parking

Parking fees are planned for two more hospitals
Managers say two more Leicester hospitals will soon be introducing car park charges.

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust says it costs around 1m to maintain the car parks at its three main sites.

The trust says it wants to spend the money raised from car parking fees on other hospital projects.

It wants to levy parking charges at Leicester General Hospital and Glenfield Hospitals.

Concessionary passes

Leicester Royal Infirmary already charges for parking.

Eric Charlesworth of the watchdog Patients' Forum said the trust has looked at many factors before taking the decision.

"People on income support can apply for concessionary passes and if you buy a long-term pass it works out to only about 3.50 a day," he said.

Mr Charlesworth said the trust's board will consider the parking proposals soon and a final decision is expected in the next few months.

Most hospitals in the East Midlands region have already decided to charge for parking, he added.
