City cemetery remains closed off
graves
Every headstone needs to be checked
It is still unclear when a cemetery which was closed due to safety reasons will reopen.

Access to Welford Road Cemetery in Leicester has been restricted to appointments only while essential renovation work is carried out.

There are 20,000 headstones at the cemetery and every one had to be checked.

The checks were taken as part of a government campaign to ensure safety in all graveyards.

Unstable stones

Leicester City Council has made safe about 1,600 of the most unstable memorials.

Officials used specialist testing methods to determine where work needed to be carried out.

Burials at the cemetery have continued throughout the renovation.

A spokesman for Leicester City Council said work is continuing but they are hopeful the site will reopen soon.
