Alan Carr will be touring Blackpool in a tram decked out as a boat |
This year's celebrity line-up to turn on the famous Blackpool Illuminations along the promenade has been announced. Comedian Alan Carr will lead the switch on, joined by singer Tony Christie, finalists from the TV's X Factor show JLS and the band Madness. The event on 4 September will be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 and the lights will shine until 8 November. The town's council has also arranged a number of free events in the Lancashire resort to tie in with the switch-on. The World Fireworks Championships, the unveiling of a new public piazza and two days of beach volleyball tournaments are due to take place over the weekend. Alan Carr said: "I can't wait for my little city break up there in the Vegas of the north. "I'll be turning you all on Friday night then cruising up and down the esplanade dressed as a sailor, in a tram decked out as a boat." The comic briefly lived in the resort when his father managed Blackpool FC in 1990.
