Warden Tommy Loftus said offenders needed to be tackled
Helmets with cameras attached to them are becoming the latest weapons in the battle against littering in Lancashire.
Wardens have been patrolling the streets of Preston wearing the devices to help catch those dropping litter.
If caught, the offender is told to put the rubbish in the bin and that they have been recorded on camera.
Preston City Council's head of environment Mark Taylor said: "We have had a positive response from the public as people are proud of their city".
The local authority has more than 50 wardens and cleaning staff, who collect at least 7,000 tonnes of litter and from the city's streets every year.
Court proceedings
Two wardens are currently patrolling using the cameras, which cost £750 each.
A person caught littering could face a fine of £75. If the matter leads to court proceedings the maximum fine could rise to £2500.
In the space of three years, 57 people have been fined for littering in the city.
Mr Taylor added: "Unfortunately we do see incidences of people blatantly dropping rubbish in the streets and they don't seem to care that our team are working hard to keep the city tidy.
"We have had a positive response from the public as people are proud of their city and do not want it looking a mess. The fact that this scheme has got people talking means it is having the desired effect."
