Further 250 job cuts at Leyland

Leyland plant
More than 1,200 people are employed at the site

Leyland Trucks are to cut almost 250 jobs and have an extended shutdown at its factory over Christmas because of a "severe decline" in demand.

The announcement comes only weeks after the company announced more than 100 jobs were to go at the site in Farington, near Leyland, Lancashire.

The factory will now close down for two weeks over Christmas instead of the normal week.

The cuts are being blamed on a decline in demand for trucks across Europe.

The firm builds Daf trucks at the factory, which employs more than 1,200 people.

There has been an estimated 40% slump in sales of all heavy trucks across Europe this year.
