The academy will replace Darwen Moorland High School |
Plans to build a state-of-the art school in Lancashire have been given the go-ahead despite opposition from local residents. The homes of some of those residents will now be demolished on land around Redearth Road in Darwen.
The Redearth Triangle plot will be the site of a new 48m academy to replace Darwen Moorland High School.
The academy has now been given planning permission and the remaining houses on the site face demolition.
Public inquiry
Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council will now be allowed to issue Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) to owners of houses remaining on the site. It has already demolished more than 80 houses.
Demolition started in Spring 2006 despite a public inquiry and uproar from local residents.
The development was put on hold while a second public inquiry took place in June this year.
Now the Secretary of State for communities and local government, Hazel Blears, has accepted her recommendation and confirmed the order.
The academy is due to open next September, initially on the site of Moorland high school, in Holden Fold, until work on the new school is complete.
It is being built as part of the Elevate pathfinder scheme to regenerate east Lancashire.
