The son of comic Eric Morecambe is hoping to secure the fate of a Victorian theatre in the legendary comedian's home town.

Gary Morecambe and the star's former chauffer, Mike Fountain are raising money for the Winter Gardens, in Morecambe by holding a lunch.

Tuesday's event is organised by Friends of the Winter Gardens who want to buy the old theatre and restore it.

The Lancashire venue closed its doors to the public in 1977.

Style guru Wayne Hemmingway, founder of clothing and show company Red or Dead, is patron of the Friends.

He was born in Morecambe where his father, wrestler Billy Two Rivers, used to perform in the 1960s at The Winter Gardens.

The Friends are a registered charity formed in 1986 with the aim of protecting the Grade II listed theatre, also known as The Victoria Pavillions, which opened in 1897.
