The vet gave the donkeys a thorough check up

Each animal must pass a medical before its owner can get a licence to operate over the resort's summer season.

The 200 donkeys plodded from stables in the town on to a car park, where they were rounded up for their medicals.

Local vet Michael Fielding inspected each animal in turn, accompanied by two council officials.

Mr Fielding examined the donkeys' teeth, looked inside their ears and gazed into their eyes to ensure all was well.

After checking each donkey's hooves for roadworthiness, they were made to trot up and down the car park at 8mph to check their legs were not lame and their joints were free of arthritis.

Earlier this week the BBC News website revealed councillors had appointed inspectors to ensure each animal is getting its hour-long lunch break, under council bylaws.
