Body in bay 'not missing cockler'
Cockle pickers at work
Twenty three people are thought to have died in the tragedy
A body found at Morecambe Bay at the weekend is not that of a missing Chinese cockle picker, Lancashire Police have confirmed.

They had earlier believed the body could belong to a 22nd worker thought to have drowned after becoming stranded by fast-moving tides in February.

The force said the body has not yet been identified.

So far 21 bodies have been recovered, but police believe a total of 23 Chinese workers died in the tragedy.

A spokeswoman said: "Based on the post-mortem examination that was carried out [on Tuesday], we don't believe it to be one of the two missing cocklers.

"We haven't yet established who the body is and there are further tests to be carried out to try and do that."

The body was spotted by workers on a platform in the Morecambe Bay gas field, 25 miles off the coast.

The Fleetwood lifeboat was called and took the body back to shore.

Five people have been charged in connection with the Morecambe Bay tragedy.
