Blackpool Airport is celebrating its 95th anniversary by recreating scenes from its opening ceremony in 1909. Thousands attended the six-day opening flying show when the airport opened on 18 October, but flights were hampered by rain and strong gales.
New owners City Hopper Airports Ltd will be flying aircraft similar to those flown nearly a century ago.
About 12 open-cockpit aircraft will fly over the airport in a display that mirrors the one planned for 1909.
Executive Chairman of City Hopper Airports Limited Paul Whelan said: "As the owners of the oldest airport in the country it is proper that we should celebrate the very first days of flight in this country. "At Blackpool's 1909 flying exhibition no-one can have visualized how aviation would develop and how important it would become to people all over the world.
"The men who took off from Blackpool 95 years ago were extremely brave, highly skilled engineers and designers who would play a hugely important role in the development of flying."
Records show that more than 500 cases of Champagne, 2,000 pork pies and "millions" of sandwiches were consumed at the opening event.
In 2004, the airport expects to handle around 250,000 passengers.
