Council debates cockling safety
Cocklers at Morecambe Bay
Tories want to improve safety but ensure cockling remains profitable
Measures to avoid a repeat of the Morecambe Bay cockling tragedy have been discussed at a special meeting.

Lancaster City Council met a day after three mussel collectors were rescued in water at Foulney Island, near Barrow, Cumbria.

The Conservatives say little action has been taken since the tragedy in February in which at least 20 Chinese cockle pickers died.

The party claims it is only a matter of time before there are more deaths.

The full council meeting, which took place on Wednesday, looked at what the authority can do to ensure there is no repeat of the tragedy.
