Lessons in the staff room are disrupted by teachers making tea |
Extension plans at an overcrowded Kent primary school have been moved forward because pupils are being taught in the kitchen, medical room and corridors. The Discovery School opened three years ago on the Kings Hill development, near West Malling in Kent, but does not currently have enough classrooms.
Its expansion was being held back to coincide with the building of thousands more new homes in Kings Hill.
But nine extra classrooms will now be ready four months earlier than planned.
The school's capacity had been due to double from 210 to 420 in September 2008, but Kent County Council said it could now happen in April 2008.
'Unacceptable' situation
Kings Hill has about 1,500 homes already built with planning consent in place for a total of 2,600.
Kent County Council said The Discovery School's growth had to be managed alongside the house building so that new places did not become frequently available to families outside Kings Hill.
Head teacher Alison Farrall said: "Then you're back to the same situation where the school is full but not able to take people who are moving onto the development."
However, Mrs Farrall does feel the situation at her school has got out of hand.
"I do find it unacceptable that we are having to use the kitchen and the corridors and the small medical room as teaching facilities," she said.
"We're trying to offer a very wide curriculum but we can't meet the needs of children because we just don't have the space."
