Children denied places in schools
The Discovery School
The council says the Discovery School will be expanded
Nineteen mothers in west Kent have been told there is no room for their children at the two primary schools on the estate where they live.

Most of the parents on the estate in Kings Hill now have to drive their children to a school two miles away.

A spokesman for Kent County Council said all the children were in good schools nearby and more places would be made on the estate by 2008.

But parents believe one of the schools can be expanded more quickly.

'Balancing Act'

The Kings Hill School and the Discovery School, together take a total of 90 children each year.

Kent County Council's cabinet member for education, John Simmonds, said: "We've got arrangements in hand to extend the Discovery places by the early part of 2008."

He added there was a danger in creating space ahead of demand because pupils can be brought in from other areas to fill surplus places.

"Where we have a huge surplus of places we try to rationalise the provisions so its always a delicate balancing act," he said.

Parent Stephanie Cook said despite living equidistant between the two schools her child was not offered a place.

"We didn't ever think there was going to be a problem but then we got the letter and my daughter was sent to Wateringbury school which is a good school but about five miles away."
