Gala event for Bali memorial fund
Paul Hussey
Paul Hussey was one of 28 Britons killed in the Bali bombings
An auction and cabaret to raise money for a memorial to the victims of the Bali bombings is being held in Kent.

The celebrity event on Sunday night has been organised by Sue Cooper, from Folkestone, whose brother, Paul Hussey, was killed in the terrorist bombings.

He was managing two hotels in Kuta when he died in October 2002.

Items up for sale at the Hythe Imperial Hotel include hotel breaks, a bottle of wine signed by Michael Howard and Tony Blair, and autographed sports shirts.

Permanent memorial

Two hundred and two people died in the Bali bombings, including 28 Britons.

Ms Cooper, whose brother was from Hawkinge, in Kent, is hoping the fundraising auction will raise 20,000 towards the cost of a permanent memorial in London for all the victims.

She said organising the event had taken a lot of work, but celebrities had not hesitated in offering to help out.

The prime minister sent Ms Cooper a signed book about the history of 10 Downing Street to be raffled at the ball.

She said: "We've been pledged 100,000 by the government towards the memorial, but it's going to cost over twice as much.

"We think people should be made aware of what happened because all the government and the prime minister ever talk about is 9/11, and people should realise that Bali happened as well."
