The ban is not aimed at people who drink responsibly |
A ban on anti-social street drinking in Kent has been extended to cover the whole of Thanet district. In 2002, the council introduced a crackdown in town centres on drinking which could lead to crime and disorder.
Now the authority has extended the ban, which does not target those who drink responsibly, to the whole of Thanet.
"It is about stopping the style of drinking that may endanger public safety and that many find threatening," said councillor Ingrid Spencer.
Arrest offenders
"It is not about curbing the enjoyment of alcohol in public that contributes to the bonhomie and atmosphere at events such as Broadstairs Folk Week, or even a family picnic on the beach.
"The outcome from similar restrictions in Folkestone and Canterbury has been very successful and I am sure that visitors and residents of Thanet will enjoy and welcome the same positive effects in the near future."
"We intend to ensure that our streets, parks and beaches are safe for everyone to enjoy," Ms Spencer said.
Police will have the power to confiscate alcohol and arrest offenders when they feel it is in the interest of public safety.
