Start of mumps vaccine programme
Student receiving vaccine
Cases in 2004 are three times higher than last year's
Students at a Kent university are being vaccinated against mumps on Tuesday after cases in the county trebled.

The inoculations are being offered by the Kent and Medway Health Protection Unit at the student union coffee bar at Canterbury College from 10am.

It is part of a national emergency plan to protect teenagers and students against the disease.

Similar sessions will take place at colleges in Maidstone, Rochester, Ashford and Dartford at later dates.

The vaccination programme was announced last week after cases in Kent rose from 39 last year to 113 so far in 2004.

Dr Mathi Chandrakumar, director of the Kent Health Protection Unit, said the increase was not an epidemic, but protection was needed against the disease.
