Mumps outbreak prompts MMR call
Vaccination
School leavers and students may also be at risk
Parents are being urged to give their children the MMR injection after a marked increase in the number of cases of mumps in Blackpool and the Fylde.

The Cumbria and Lancashire Health Protection unit has written to GPs requesting they monitor the situation.

It says parents should be aware of the importance of vaccination while young adults are also at risk.

Mumps can affect anyone who has not developed natural immunity or has not been vaccinated.

Symptoms include fever, headaches and tenderness in one or both sides of the neck.

Parents are being advised that all school age children who have not had the MMR vaccination should be given two doses over a six week period.

It is also recommended that school leavers and those starting university or college who have not received MMR before, or only had one dose, should also be offered the vaccination.
