Pc Guy Miller hopes to return to work in a couple of months |
A man has been jailed for 15 years for attempting to murder a police officer by running him over. Ricky Hales, 20, of Deptford, south east London, was sentenced at the Old Bailey and will serve his jail term at a young offenders' institution.
Pc Guy Miller was badly hurt when he was hit by his own patrol car in Kings Hill in Kent in December 2003.
Maxwell Lancaster, 18, of Catford, south east London, was jailed for seven years for aggravated vehicle taking.
'Ruthless and callous'
Pc Miller was left in a coma for more than two months after being struck by his car near West Malling.
He had been trying to arrest the two men after they were seen riding a stolen motorbike at speeds of up to 150 mph.
Hales and Lancaster abandoned the bike after a police chase and Pc Miller went to chase them on foot.
The two men were then seen inside the police officer's car with Pc Miller pulling the doors and banging on the rear window to let them know he was there.
Ricky Hales was called callous and reckless by the police |
Hales, who had no driving licence, reversed the patrol car over the officer.
Hales had admitted handling a stolen motorbike and taking the police car but denied the murder attempt charge.
Pc Miller, who was at the court in a wheelchair for the sentencing, will never fully recover from his injuries.
Judge Warwick McKinnon, told Hales that the officer was lucky not to have lost his life.
"Those who act like a desperado as you did and commit serious acts of violence on officers doing their duty will feel the full force of the law bear down on them."
The judge said what Hales had done was a "ruthless and callous act of cruelty".
Outside the court, Pc Miller said he just wanted to get on with his life and carry on with his career.
"It brings a chapter to an end," he said.
"Everyone has been through the mill, but life is now getting back together."
Lancaster jail term also included two unrelated armed robberies.
