Fire crew comes under wasp attack

A wasp buzzed up one firefighter's nose
Firefighters tackling a fire in a stable were attacked by a swarm of wasps after they disturbed the insects' nest in a water hydrant.

One of the firefighters was stung up his nose and on his face and had to be taken to hospital.

It took crews more than five hours to bring the fire at the stables in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, under control.

Four firefighters who were stung received injections but were able to return to duty.

Stable destroyed

The fire broke out at Hole Farm in Nellington Road at about 2215 BST on Thursday.

When firefighters tried to get water from a hydrant at the farm, they disturbed the nest angering the insects, which set upon the firefighters.

The four stung firefighters were all given anti-histamine injections but were not seriously hurt.

The stable was almost completely destroyed, but no animals were hurt.

There had been concern the heat would ignite gas cylinders in the stables but they remained intact and did not explode.
