Dogs shot dead with air weapons

An air rifle was used to shoot and kill a dog on Shellness Beach
Two dogs have been shot dead in separate incidents in Leysdown, Kent, leading police to issue a warning about air rifles and ball bearing (BB) guns.

It is believed one dog was shot with an air rifle at about 2010 BST on Wednesday while on Shellness Beach.

The other dog is reported to have been killed in the Shellness area after being shot at about 1140 BST on 30 May.

In a separate incident on 31 May, a 15-year-old girl was shot in the eye with a BB gun while in Leysdown Road.

'Serious' consequences

The teenager was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital and later discharged, but police say there is a possibility she may still lose her eye.

Chief Inspector Ian Hall said that if she does, the police will be treating the crime as an incident of grievous bodily harm.

He also highlighted the dangers of allowing children to play with air rifles or BB guns.

"I would advise any parent who allows their child to have such a weapon to think seriously about the consequences of doing so," he said.

"What may seem like harmless fun could result in a person being arrested for criminal damage or assault."
