The girl was taken to hospital by the North West Air Ambulance
A 13-year-old girl is in a critical condition after being shot in the face with an air rifle.

The shooting took place as a group of young people were playing together in a field behind Southgate, in Charnock Richard, Lancashire, on Tuesday.

The girl was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Preston Hospital and was later transferred to Pendlebury Children's Hospital.

A 12-year-old boy has been arrested and released on police bail.

Det Insp Brian Quinn of Lancashire Police said: "We are investigating to find out what happened.

"We know that six or seven youths were together in the field and we will be speaking to all of them to find out how the air rifle was discharged."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
