Council's Labour leader voted out
Ken Branson

The leader of Hull City Council's ruling Labour group has been voted out of office.

Labour councillors decided on Monday by 15 votes to 11 to replace Colin Inglis with Ken Branson.

Mr Branson has done the job before but stood down in 2002 when Labour temporarily lost control of the council to the Liberal Democrats.

A meeting of all councillors next week will decide if he is to succeed Mr Inglis as leader of the council.

Mr Inglis, who remains chairman of the Humberside Police Authority, has publicly fallen out with some of his cabinet colleagues.

He clashed with his deputy Darren Hale over Endeavour High School's poor GCSE results before briefly removing Mr Hale's cabinet responsibility for education.

The challenge to Mr Inglis was the first to a sitting Labour leader in Hull since 1995.
