Liverpool already has big screen entertainment. |
Hull is to offer public entertainment and news on the big screen as part of a drive to regenerate the city centre. The broadcasting project will provide a variety of information 24 hours a day in Victoria Square.
The BBC has teamed up with the city council to offer the service which will be launched on Friday to coincide with the start of the Olympic Games.
Council leader Colin Inglis said the screen offered "endless possibilities for the future".
Central point
Mr Inglis estimates that tourism in Hull currently brings in 5m visitors and the screen will be yet another attraction in the city.
"This could fast become the place to share the enjoyment of watching great sporting events, concerts and locally made films as well as being a central point for information," he said.
"We wanted to make sure we were ahead of the game and that our residents and visitors were amongst the first to enjoy big screen broadcasting."
Initial coverage will be daily from 0700 BST to 2200 BST and work on a permanent structure to house the screen will be completed by autumn.
Hull is leading the way in big screen entertainment alongside Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.
