Town flood defences strengthened
Sheet piling work
The work is expected to be completed in May
A 2.6m project to strengthen flood defences for thousands of people in Goole is getting under way.

Hundreds of heavy steel piles are being driven into a 400-metre stretch of defences parallel to Hook Road to prevent the bank eroding.

The Environment Agency has warned that heavy machinery is likely to create some extra noise during the work, which is expected to last until May.

Officers would try to keep it to a minimum, a spokeswoman said.

Project manager Sarah Burtonwood said the area had already been prepared for the work.

"Goole's flood defences protect around 9,000 properties so it is vital that the Environment Agency makes sure they are in a good condition and provide the best possible protection for the town," she said.
