Police target drivers with phones

Police say more drivers now use their phones
Police in Hull are getting tough with motorists who continue to use mobile phones while driving.

Surveys have found that more drivers in the city are using the devices since laws outlawing them were introduced.

Officers are setting up road checks on Beverley Road on Friday to target those ignoring the law.

Drivers currently face a 30 fine but new legislation proposed for 2005 will see this increased to 60 and three penalty points.

Hull City Council safety officers Mark Jessop said: "When the law was introduced we saw a reduction in the number of motorists calling when driving.

"Sadly bad habits quickly reappeared and now the situation is worse than ever.

"In particular the use of hand held phones by lorry and van drivers seems to have increased."
