Police alarm over 'phone drivers'

Police say an alarming number of drivers still use their phone
An "alarming" number of motorists in South Yorkshire are still using their mobile phones at the wheel, putting other road users at risk, police say.

More than 130 drivers are stopped every month in the county - a figure well above neighbouring forces.

Pc John Richardson, of South Yorkshire Police, said the figures proved that current legislation was not working.

"People are abusing the law and risking fatal and serious injury. There have been several near misses," he said.

New laws

Between January and October, 1,341 drivers were issued with a 30 fixed penalty ticket in South Yorkshire.

But Pc Richardson believes that only the introduction of penalty points will see the figure fall.

"Our officers will continue to be vigilant but I don't think there will be a big enough deterrent until there is a change in the law to make this offence endorsable," he said.

Last month the government unveiled plans to double the fine and impose penalty points on those who use their phone while driving.
