More than 20 primary schools out of 77 in the city are to be reviewed |
Parents in Hull have formed an action group to save a school earmarked by the council for closure. Hull City Council has announced 21 primary schools are to be reviewed as it needs to axe 1,180 surplus places in order to meet government guidelines.
There are currently 3,320 primary school places not filled in the city.
Parents at Oldfleet Primary on Greatfield Estate, claim the closure will destroy the area and are planning a series of demonstrations.
Pupils have also been involved in the campaign with many writing letters and poems to the council.
As well as looking at the number of free places, the reviews will look at academic standards and the state of school buildings.
Oldfleet head teacher Keith Gordon says the information that the decision was based on is out of date.
He said: "We've had lots of repair work carried out already, in fact our school building is one of the best in the area.
"If we were forced to close it would be a huge blow for the community and would also mean children being taught in much bigger classes of more than 30."
Hull's director of education, Helen McMullen, said: "We realise this is unsettling news for teachers, staff and parents at those schools, but it is a long-standing issue and must be addressed."
A final decision on which schools are to close is expected to be made in January.
