Rail campaign gathers momentum
Rail tracks
Campaigners want tracks on the old line to be relaid
The fight to reopen an old railway line is gaining momentum with thousands of people adding their support to the cause.

Members of The Minsters Rail Campaign have organised a petition concerning the former Beverley to York line.

And they are already halfway towards reaching their target of 10,000 signatures.

Campaigners want to see East Riding council carry out a feasibility study into reviving the link.

The line was closed on the orders of Dr Beeching in the 1960s and, in its heyday, trains served Pocklington, Stamford Bridge and Market Weighton.

But with growing levels of traffic on the A1079, the Minsters Rail Campaign was formed to lobby for an alternative.

Campaigners want the route safeguarded so passenger and freight trains can be reintroduced.

And they are also calling for a traffic study to be carried out to assess the impact of a possible service and an engineering analysis of the costs if trains were reintroduced.
