Clampdown on abandoned cars

Cars will be destroyed just four days after being found
Up to 800 vehicles will be crushed within the next year in North Lincolnshire as council leaders adopt a "zero tolerance" approach to abandoned cars.

And the campaign could see cars being destroyed just four days after being identified by police rather than the current two-week wait.

North Lincolnshire Council leader Don Stewart said: "Abandoned vehicles are a massive problem nationally and locally we aim to tackle this head on.

"By taking a zero tolerance approach, we are taking a tough stance to help rid the area of this eyesore."

Crackdown begins

The council has already scrapped 43 cars under its new clampdown and says around 800 abandoned vehicles will be destroyed each year.

Just 313 vehicles were disposed of last year, the council added.

From now on, owners will be served a notice within two working days, giving them 24 hours to respond.

If nobody comes forward, the vehicle will be disposed of within 24 hours, or just three hours in emergency cases.

Mr Stewart said: "I want to reassure the people of North Lincolnshire that we will not tolerate this criminal behaviour.

"And in doing so we have taken a major step forward on cracking down on abandoned vehicles once and for all."
