Police will mount a purge on street drinkers |
A ban on drinking alcohol in public is being extended in an East Yorkshire village in a bid to curb unruly behaviour. The East Riding of Yorkshire Council has moved in partnership with police and Cottingham Parish Council to extend a scheme to outlaw the consumption of alcohol in the street.
No-drinking zones in the village, which sits on the outskirts of Hull, will include: King Street, car parks to the rear of King Street shops, including Safeway's, Hallgate Memorial Gardens, Market Green, the pavilion and king George V playing fields and Cotta Court.
Police in the village say they will take positive action against anyone breaking the ban, including reporting offences for prosecution, possibly resulting in a fine of up to 500, as well as seizing and pouring away alcohol.
And joint operations between the council anti-social behaviour team and police will take place over coming weekends in an attempt to reduce noise, nuisance and under-age drinking offences.
CCTV equipment
Inspector Andy Woodhead of Cottingham's local policing team said: "Children aged between 12 and 18 are regularly drinking alcohol in public places in Cottingham.
"They are causing general nuisance, damage and using threatening behaviour which will not be tolerated."
Anti-social behaviour officer Nigel Brignall said: "Mobile CCTV equipment will also be used to identify those drinking in areas where it is not allowed, enabling police to take direct action against those responsible."
