Warning over summer drinking
Breath test
Twice as many people drink drive in the summer
Police in Leicestershire are cracking down on summer drink driving.

Senior officers say the problem is far worse during hot weather than at either Christmas or New Year.

In a four day blitz from 22 to 26 August, officers in Leicestershire will be hammering the message home.

Police acknowledge the hot weather also encourages some people to consume more alcohol in an effort to quench their thirst.

Road safety co-ordinator, Mr James Gibson, said: "Drivers have to be very careful if they are topping up their alcohol intake throughout a day, it becomes difficult to assess how much alcohol they have consumed.

"It is also worth remembering that home poured measures at barbecues and parties can be very different to pub measures.

"The only safe way is not to drink if you are driving.

"If you are having friends over to the house, make sure that you have plenty of non-alcoholic drinks on offer for the drivers."
