Royal visitor opens Museums Quarter
The Duke of Gloucester
The Duke visited all four of the museums in the new quarter
The Museums Quarter in Hull has been opened by the Duke of Gloucester.

The new quarter links the four museums on the High Street: Wilberforce House, Streetlife, Hull and East Riding Museum and the Arctic Corsair.

They feature transport collections, a reconstruction of a Roman town and dinosaurs as well as artefacts from the region.

The Duke visited the Roman and mediaeval galleries and was presented with two books published by the Hull and East Riding Museum.

Brian Hayton, head of Hull Museums, said: "Tourism is a big industry in Hull.

"443,000 people visited the museums last year and that was while building work was still going on.

"This is a major new development for people to come and see over the summer."

The quarter has been funded by European cash, the Heritage Lottery Fund, the city council and the Wolfson Foundation.
