Hundreds of homes in Herefordshire were left without power after storms late on Monday night.

About 400 homes experienced a power cut for several hours on Tuesday, but virtually everyone had supplies by late afternoon, Central Networks said.

Michaelchurch Escley Primary School and Eastnor Primary School were closed.

Parts of the West Midlands region saw snow showers on Monday night but not in the quantities predicted. Drivers had been warned to take extra care.

Flood warning

About 80 homes in Herefordshire had remained without supplies at lunchtime on Tuesday, Central Networks said.

A spokesman said the majority of problems had been caused by overhead lines being brought down by snow, or trees affected by snow hitting the overhead lines.

Herefordshire Council said it had no need to open its emergency information line set up for the "severe winter storm" forecast by the Met Office overnight.

It said its gritting fleet was not needed either as the small quantity of snow turned to slush on Tuesday.

Melting sleet and snow caused ground water flooding in some parts.

The Environment Agency issued a flood warning for the River Avon from Evesham to upstream of Tewkesbury.
