Worcestershire parents caught providing under-age children with alcohol to drink in public places will be prosecuted, police have pledged. West Mercia officers say children are no longer buying the drink themselves but are being given it by others.
They are taking action against parents giving drink to Droitwich children.
Test purchases failed to find town outlets selling to potential under-age drinkers, leading police to think adults provide youngsters with alcohol.
'We will prosecute'
Officers met retailers and councillors to discuss ways forward to deal with problems of under-age drinking.
Sgt Mark Smith said: "The vast majority of youths drinking in public places in the town are no longer buying the alcohol themselves, but are bringing it from home - and in some instances are given it by their parents.
"While this is a difficult area for us to address, if we do obtain evidence that any adult is supplying alcohol to under-18s - whether parents, other relatives or friends - we will actively prosecute the individuals concerned.
"We are pleased to see that the message has now got through to retailers that the police and partners continue to pro-actively tackle the sale of alcohol to under-18s."
