�5m flood defence grant for town

The town was badly effected during the floods of 2000
A �5m grant has been awarded to improve flood defences in Ross-on-Wye.

The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has granted Herefordshire Council the money to help protect the town centre.

Some of the cash will be spent on building a 350-metre tunnel between the Homs Road and Kings Acre car parks.

Parts of the town centre were badly affected by the floods of 2000. The work is due to begin in the of spring 2006 and be completed within a year.

The grant will also be spent on creating a flood storage area to the east of the A40.

Torrents of water streamed through Ross town centre in 2000 as both the Chatterley and Rudhall brooks overflowed.

One of the worst-hit businesses was C Weyman Pallet Supplies on the Broadmeadow Industrial Estate, which suffered �100,000 damage.
