End of line for New Street link
The direct rail link between Kidderminster and Birmingham New Street station is to be axed.

Central Trains' summer timetable, which comes into effect on Sunday, shows trains will now go to Birmingham Snow Hill.

An emergency motion was unanimously passed at a Wyre Forest District Council meeting on Wednesday evening deploring the loss of the direct link.

The authority is calling on Central to reverse its decision.

Capacity issues

The move means that passengers who want to connect with the Intercity network will have to change at Smethwick Galton Bridge station.

Councillor Mike Oborski warned the loss of the service would not only cause hardship to many Wyre Forest residents but could damage the economic status of the district.

He said Central had gone back on an earlier pledge to maintain a limited service to New Street from Kidderminster.

A Central Trains spokesman said there would be more services than ever before between Kidderminster and Birmingham under the new timetable.

He added that the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) had brought train companies together to try to solve "capacity issues" at Birmingham New Street and that some changes were inevitable.
