A church is preparing for its first service this year after its worshippers carried out about 40,000 of interior renovation work themselves. One volunteer, decorative painter Nemone Burgess, has spent nine months overseeing improvements at St John the Baptist Church, Byford, Herefordshire.
The church contains medieval wall paintings which have been secured with the help of an English Heritage grant.
The Bishop of Hereford Anthony Priddis will conduct the service on Sunday.
Churchwarden Maggie Denaro said: "We are really proud of what we have achieved here, especially Nem.
"We had an estimate for 40,000, but having already raised funds to secure the fabric of the building, it just seemed too much.
"But Nem said she would do it for free and everyone else has helped where the can."
