Migrants' village scheme on hold
Brierley caravan site, near Leominster, Herefordshire
The site will have its own shops and leisure facilities
A decision on whether to allow a development for 1,000 migrant strawberry pickers in the Herefordshire countryside has been put on hold.

Fruit company S&A Produce wants to build the development at Brierley Court Farm near Leominster.

Despite widespread opposition from local residents, planning officials are recommending the scheme for approval.

Herefordshire Council was to discuss the plan on Wednesday but the meeting has been put on hold for a month.

The date was changed after campaigners wrote to the council asking why a decision was being made before the deadline for objections was over.

The site would provide accommodation for 1,000 workers and is to house shops, leisure facilities and a doctor's surgery.

S&A Produce, which already has a similar development at Marden in Herefordshire, uses more than 2,000 migrants from across Europe during the harvest season.

They are employed legally under the government's seasonal agricultural workers' scheme.

The application will be discussed on 12 May.
