Sewage spillage closes road
Floods in Worcester
The River Severn may peak in Worcester on Saturday or Sunday.
One of the main routes into Worcester has closed for at least 24-hours because sewage has flowed into the road, following flooding.

The decision was taken by the city council, the Environment Agency and police at 1100 GMT on Saturday, to close Hylton Road.

Water pressure has caused manholes on the road to lift up causing raw sewage to spill out.

The road will remain shut to cars and pedestrians until the problem has been dealt with.

New temporary flood defences were erected on Hylton Road on Friday.

River levels

During the night, water seeped through the barriers leaving a great deal on the road.

In Bewdley, parts of the town is under water and there are road and bridge closures.

Flood defences there have saved many riverside properties from flooding and are being hailed a success by the Environment Agency.

Joe Cadwalladis from the Environment Agency, leader of the overnight team looking after the barriers, says the worst could be over.

"It has all gone to plan. We think the levels peaked at 4.9 metres against an expected 5.1 metres," he said.

"The levels are starting to recede very slightly."

A flood warning on the River Wye has been lifted.

The River Severn is expected to peak late on Saturday evening or Sunday morning.
