Bewdley has flooded several times in recent years |
A Worcestershire town's innovative flood defence system has been awarded a major engineering prize. The year's work it took to perfect a removable flood barrier in Bewdley has been recognised by the Institute of Civil Engineers.
The scheme, which was completed at the end of last year, combines extensive underground defences and drainage pipes with a portable aluminium barrier.
It can be quickly installed when flooding is expected and taken down again once the danger has passed.
'Great news'
Bewdley has been hit by several floods, including the worst in more than 50 years in November 2000.
The Environment Agency and Severn Trent Water were praised by the award judges for the level of attention they paid to the interests of the public during the planning and construction.
A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: "This is great news.
"The parties involved have provided Severn Side North with a defence which will not compromise the character of the town."
Removable flood barriers are also being used in Shrewsbury.
