City centre pubs are to shut for two hours after the FA Cup clash between Southampton and Portsmouth on Saturday.

More than 250 police officers will be on duty around St Mary's stadium in Southampton when the rivals meet.

Games between the two have been marred by violence, with 93 people arrested at Fratton Park in 2004 and five held at the pair's last meeting in 2005.

Police said preparations have been under way for weeks to ensure a "safe and professional" event for supporters.

Shopkeepers near the ground admitted they were worried and would monitor the situation.

We all hope no one spoils the day but anyone who does break the law can expect to be dealt with
Ch Supt Matthew Greening

More than 4,000 Pompey fans are expected at the game which kicks off at 1230 GMT.

Ch Supt Matthew Greening said: "We have been planning for this event since the match was announced and have been working closely with both clubs.

"The two local teams both have great footballing histories and that includes strong but mainly healthy rivalry.

"We will be there on Saturday to deliver an excellent policing operation and with the club make sure it's a great day for everyone involved.

"We all hope no one spoils the day but anyone who does break the law can expect to be dealt with appropriately and effectively."

Police have urged Portsmouth fans to use organised coaches to get to the match, which will drop off and pick up at the stadium.
