TV actor John Nettles is to receive an honorary degree from the University of Southampton, where he once studied.

The star, better known as Sgt Jim Bergerac in the long-running detective series, will receive his doctorate at the Highfield campus on 26 July.

It was during his student days in Southampton that Mr Nettles was first spotted by a theatrical agent.

He is one of 13 people receiving honorary degrees during the graduation ceremonies from 20 to 27 July.

Others include former Southampton mayor Parvin Damani and Sue Lopez, a founder member of Southampton Women's Football Club who helped the team to eight FA Cup victories.

Polish-born Holocaust survivor Ben Helfgott, who went on to weightlift for Great Britain in two Olympic Games, will receive a degree, as will Trevor Phillips, Chairman of the Commission of Racial Equality since 2003.

This year's graduation will also see the university's new chancellor Sir John Parker take over from Lord Selborne.
