A small flotilla of boats re-enacted the Battle of Trafalgar |
Thousands of spectators and dozens of boats turned out to watch a fireworks display billed as the most spectacular ever at the Cowes Regatta Festival. Organisers said 120,000 people watched the spectacle on Friday evening from land and boats off the Isle of Wight.
This year's event included a re-enactment of the Battle of Trafalgar to celebrate its 200th anniversary.
Two barges and several smaller boats represented the British and French fleets in a battle scene.
The budget for the display was doubled to 60,000 by a gift from an anonymous donor.
The fireworks have been part of the regatta for the last 130 years, with many boat crews gathering to watch from the water.
Harbour masters set a 15-knot (24km/h) speed limit around the spectacle, after a crash following the 2004 event in which a passenger lost the sight of an eye.
