Just ten motorcyclists were killed in 2004 |
The number of people killed in motorcycle crashes in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight has dropped to its lowest level in six years, police say. Ten motorcyclists died on roads across the two counties in 2004, compared to 33 in 2003, and 22 in 2002.
The fall comes after the 2003 rise sparked police and council campaigns to tackle and publicise the problem.
Weekend patrols were put in place on popular motorcycle routes, including the A339, A272 and the A32.
'Ten too many'
Members of Hampshire Constabulary's roads policing unit also took part in a joint operation with other forces across the South East.
Pc Mick Gear, the force's "BikeSafe" co-ordinator, said: "There has been a remarkable drop in the number of motorcyclists that have been killed on roads across the two counties so far this year.
"We are pleased that our efforts appear to be working. What we mustn't do now is become complacent.
"Ten people still died in motorcycle collisions in 2004 and that is ten too many."
