New bridge to be built over canal

Plans for a new canal bridge on the A46 in Stroud, as part of the restoration of the Cotswold Canal, have been put on public display.

Part of the works include widening Bath Road to allow the future expansion of the Merrywalks double mini roundabout junction into a major roundabout.

Temporary traffic systems would be used while the building work is carried out.

Work on the new bridge is scheduled to begin in March 2010 and be completed in February 2011.

Councillor Stan Waddington said: "The road works, when completed, will improve the flow of traffic at the Merrwalks junction as well as restoring Wallbridge.

"The bridge will be a key gateway into Stroud making a strong visual impact on everybody approaching from the A46."

The original canal at Merrywalks was filled in during the late 1960s.

The work was carried out during the realignment of the A46 /A419 junction at the point where the Slad Brook flowed into the canal next to the old Stroud brewery.
