Company formed to restore canals

A new company has been set up to oversee the restoration of the Cotswold canals in Gloucestershire.

The Stroud Valleys Canal Company will buy the route of the canals and other land necessary for the restoration.

Once restored, the company will take on responsibility for their operational management, maintenance and repair including Brimscombe Port.

The project has received £19.6m from the Heritage Lottery Fund and South West Regional Development Agency.

Restoration of the Cotswold Canals between Brimscombe and Stonehouse is being led by Stroud District Council.

Councillor Nigel Studdert-Kennedy of Stroud District Council said it was another huge step.

"Having all the necessary land owned by the company simplifies everything.

"We expect the land transfers to begin happening quite quickly and we look forward to making some positive statements in the very near future."
